What does 'Free Zone' of Hyderabad mean?

Many people may be confused about the recent controversy regarding the demands to make Hyderabad a free zone or let it remain a part of sixth zone.

Till 1970 the people of Andhra Pradesh can apply for jobs anywhere in Andhra Pradesh without any borders. However in that year to appease the Telangana separatists, Indira Gandhi divided Andhra Pradesh into six zones where people of a zone are now made eligible for the majority (70%) of jobs or seats in colleges etc in that particular zone.

Hyderabad was clubbed under Zone number six which includes Nalgonda, Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medak, Nizamabad and Mahbubnagar districts. So people from these districts are eligible for around 70% of posts and government seats in Hyderabad.

However this has been contested by many people since many years. They argue that since Hyderabad is the capital of Andhra Pradesh the people all over Andhra Pradesh are eligible for jobs in this city and have been demanding to make Hyderabad a free zone. Even the Supreme Court few months back and also today passed judgment in favor of making Hyderabad a free zone.
