With Trai getting tough on unsolicited commercial calls made to mobile phone users, telemarketers have now turned their pesky attention to land lines as an alternate route to the consumers ear.

Telemarketers are targeting fixed line phones with far greater frequency than ever before. Though the population of fixed line phones is significantly lower than of mobile phones and depleting, it still offers sizeable numbers.

At the end of September, India had 315.31 million wireless subscribers and 38.35 million fixed line users. Of the fixed line population, MTNL accounts for 3.57 million in Delhi and Mumbai while BSNL accounts for 30.12 million subscribers across all telecom circles except Delhi and Mumbai. Bharti has 2.5 million , Reliance 1.02 million, and Tatas and others 1.15 million subscribers.

MORE than 80 people are dead after terrorists used grenades and automatic weapons to attack crowds at hotels, a restaurant and train station in Mumbai, India.
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra state said the situation was not yet contained as commando units attempted to wrest back control of two luxury hotels, where scores of westerners are believed to being held hostage.

Parts of Mumbai remained under siege, with police and gunmen exchanging gunfire at the Taj Mahal and Oberoi Trident hotels.

"The situation is still not under control and we are trying to flush out any more terrorists hiding inside the two hotels," said Vilasrao Deshmukh.

More than 100 people have been killed and hundreds injured in a series of well-coordinated terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

Terrorists, who apparently came in by boats, struck at 10 places in south Mumbai including five-star hotels, hospitals and train stations.

There is a desperate hostage situation in at least two locations -- the Taj and the Trident hotels. In the Taj Colaba, at least 100 people are believed to be trapped probably held hostage by terrorists.
