August 2, 2009 - 01:04 — rekhaNaga Naresh Karutura has just passed out of IIT Madras in Computer Science and has joined Google in Bangalore.
You may ask, what's so special about this 21-year-old when there are hundreds of students passing out from various IITs and joining big companies like Google?
Naresh is special. His parents are illiterate. He has no legs and moves around in his powered wheel chair. (In fact, when I could not locate his lab, he told me over the mobile phone, 'I will come and pick you up'. And in no time, he was there to guide me)

Death and Foreclosure
June 27, 2009 - 11:33 — vikasptaA blog reader named Lee emailed us a photo he took on Highway 86 in Imperial, California. "It made me wonder if [the economy] is really that bad that even dead people will lose their resting places," he writes. "What will they do? Evict the dead?"
We called Victor Carrillo, the supervisor for Imperial County listed on the sign, to find out.
"It's a privately owned cemetery," he tells us. "I presume it will be purchased by another entity in the cemetery business. That's been typical."
For a new owner to use the land as something other than a cemetery, says Carrillo, they'd have to contact all the families with relatives buried there, pay to move all the remains, request a land-use zone change, and have numerous public hearings. read more

Children in Pakistan
June 18, 2009 - 11:57 — shilpaAccording to Pakistani authorities and the UN, at least 3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have now been registered as a result from recent fighting and on-going military operations against the Taliban in Pakistan's Swat, Buner, and Lower Dir districts.
Refugee families are often made up of only women and children, the older men staying behind to care for their homes and crops. UN humanitarian chief John Holmes issued a desperate appeal for hundreds of millions of dollars to help those who have fled the war, warning that the U.N. can only sustain its current aid efforts for one month.
Photographers in the area have captured many powerful images of those affected, some of the most striking focused on children, from which I've collected 38 here for you. read more
