Kotak Wealth-Crisil joined the big league of Capgemini-Merrill Lynch, Northbridge Asia, Credit Suisse and Barclays Wealth in their own way, launching their first volume of "wealthy Indians" that forecasts wealth in India. According to the report affluent individuals with assets of at least Rs 25 crore ( Approx U.S. Dollars 5 Million  )will triple by 2016 to 2,19,000. Their assets may grow five-fold to Rs 235 lakh crore, it said.</p>
<p>Each institution sets its own definition of affluence, parameters and chooses its sample to conclude how the growth would pan out. But statisticians and economists that none of them are probably accurate, or closer to truth. "We live in a country which has a large shadow economy," says Maneesh Kumar, MD at Burgeon Advisors, New Delhi.</p>
<p>"Putting a finger on the exact net worth of an individual or family is a difficult task. This makes assessing the metrics of net worth a challenging task. Many of these assets such as real estate, art and commodities can be accumulated today in a large part with cash. While calculating net asset, one also has to see their liabilities, which most of the time is shadowed."</p>
<p>Financial services firms, which lure rich clients to earn a fee from advising or investing on their behalf, depend on some perceived to be scientific approach to forecast affluence. These numbers are used to convince the rich to appoint them as advisors.</p>
<p>"There is a lot of subjectivity involved in such surveys; this reduces accuracy of such surveys by a good measure," said Golaka Nath, senior vice-president, Clearing Corporation of India, who is a visiting faculty at many management institutes. "Such surveys are done by collecting data from different sources. Readers of such reports should adopt a conservative approach as findings of such surveys could have several drawbacks."</p>
<p>The Other Side of the Fence<br />
But in a country like India where less than a tenth of the population pays income tax and millions live without even basic identity proof, forecasting is a lot more complicated. "We've done our survey using well-drafted questionnaires and long personal interviews," said Roopa Kudva, MD &amp; CEO, Crisil.</p>
<p>"Efforts have been put to get as much accurate detail as possible; we've managed to get data and process it, taking into account the sensibilities of the respondent," she said at the launch of 'Top of the pyramid', a report on wealthy. These surveys could be indicators of direction, but can't be relied up on in decision making.</p>
<p>"No, it is not possible," said DV Pai, professor emeritus-department of mathematics, IIT Mumbai. "The estimates that you derive using such random methods may strictly be off the mark. Incomplete information, data contamination, mental instabilities of respondents and inadequate sample size may not yield accurate results. It is difficult to measure wealth using mathematical models; range of wealth could vary widely among seemingly similar respondents."</p>
<p>Most wealth reports are prepared using questionnaire and personal interview method. These methods are fraught with risks of data contamination as it involves good measure of respondent bias. Getting accurate wealth details of people is a next-to-impossible task, researchers said.
