There appears to be a general consensus that there are various factors that influence the development of acne.  Androgens and lithium are drugs, that have been found to cause acne. As well, some cosmetics alter the follicles causing them to stick together, making a plug and preventing the sebum from flowing out.  As a result a pimple develops.  As far as the impact diet may have; I have my own personal experience to relate to.  At one point I had severe acne.
