MUMBAI: Maharashtra deputy chief minister R R Patil, who was in the crosshairs in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, resigned on Monday.

"I have submitted my resignation letter to chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. I have gone by my conscience and decided to take this step," Patil said.

The Maharastra deputy chief minister said this in the aftermath of the criticism following Mumbai terror strikes.

"I pondered over the issue the whole night yesterday. Finally, I have decided to quit as per my conscience," Patil said.

Arrested terrorist Azam Amir Kasav, alias Ajmal Kasab has stopped eating for the last two days. Kasab, currently in crime branch custody, has been lodged in the lockup at the commisserate's office since he was caught near Girgaum Chowpatty on Wednesday night. Since Kasab's arrest, the police have been trying hard to get more information from him about his group, but he seems to be a tough nut to crack.

Kasab has stopped eating to avoid police torture since he was discharged from the Nair hospital on Thursday afternoon. "Neither is he eating anything nor has he agreed to reveal anything about his links," an officer from the crime branch said.

Now, telemarketers target fixed lines

With Trai getting tough on unsolicited commercial calls made to mobile phone users, telemarketers have now turned their pesky attention to land lines as an alternate route to the consumers ear.

Telemarketers are targeting fixed line phones with far greater frequency than ever before. Though the population of fixed line phones is significantly lower than of mobile phones and depleting, it still offers sizeable numbers.

At the end of September, India had 315.31 million wireless subscribers and 38.35 million fixed line users. Of the fixed line population, MTNL accounts for 3.57 million in Delhi and Mumbai while BSNL accounts for 30.12 million subscribers across all telecom circles except Delhi and Mumbai. Bharti has 2.5 million , Reliance 1.02 million, and Tatas and others 1.15 million subscribers.

When two white tiger cubs were born during a hurricane they had to be separated from their mother after their sanctuary flooded.

However they have since found an unlikely surrogate mother in chimpanzee Anjana, who has taken on the role of caring for the cubs.

It is a absolute betrayal of trust for the solid earth to collapse under us, on a par with terra firma becoming terra jello during a quake. A 330-foot-deep sinkhole killed at least two teenagers as it swallowed about a dozen homes early Friday and forced the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people in a crowded Guatemala City neighborhood. Officials blamed the sinkhole on recent rains and an underground sewage flow from a ruptured main.
