Arthritis is a joint disease, a cause of affliction for many these days. It is the leading cause of pain and disability, and often makes attending to daily chores quite impossible. Arthritis may be defined as an inflammation of joints. All patients of arthritis complain of pain but there are also many other symptoms like swelling, tenderness, warmth, stiffness, redness of skin around the ailing joint, formation of nodules in the area surrounding the ailing joint, fatigue, loss of weight, fever and anemia.
Among the many types, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout are the most common. Osteoarthritis occurs due to cartilage degeneration and loss, resulting in bone friction and deterioration of joint. Aging, obesity, bone injury and bone infection are factors triggering osteoarthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by an over-active immune system attacking and eroding healthy joint tissues. Gout springs from excess toxicity in body and metabolic disorders, leading to uric acid crystallization within joints. Heredity, dehydration, wrong food habit, wrong joint alignment, sedentary lifestyle, stress are other factors aggravating arthritic conditions. Both minor as well as major joints can be affected by arthritis.
