The spinal column consists of an intricate network of nerves, bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Inflammation or straining of any of these parts may lead to backache. Now we will cast a glance on the several possible causes that may trigger the inflammation or straining. Understanding the exact cause of back pain is the first step to proper treatment. Here follows some of the major causes of backache -

1. Lumber muscle strain causes low backache. The patient may even forget what it was that had caused the strain or spasm, but the good part of the story is that pain from lumber muscle strain subsides within a few weeks.

2. Ruptured or herniated disc is another common cause of backache. The patient can get relief from such pain by going for a surgery or taking certain precautions in day to day life.

3. Discogenic back pain is a low back pain. It occurs due to some damage of the intervertabral disc excluding disc rupture.

Back pain is one of the most common ailments that urge us to visit a doctor frequently. It may occur in the form of a dull ache or even a sharp piercing pain along with numbness, burning sensation and tingling sensation. The pain may be acute (lasting for less than 4 weeks), sub acute (lasting for about 4-12 weeks) or chronic (lasting for more than 12 weeks).

The pain usually occurs along the spine and then spreads to the sides. Since there is a connection between spinal nerves and the nerves and tissues in other parts of the body, the pain may often radiate in to the legs, foot, hand, palms etc. Anatomically backache may be classified in to neck pain, upper backache, low backache, and tail bone pain.

On the basis of etiology, we can have two types of backache: non specific and secondary backache. There is no serious underlying pathological condition in case of non specific backache. On the other hand, secondary back pain springs from critical pathological conditions like metastatic cancer, epidural abscess, spinal osteomyelitis etc. Thus if the pain is persistent, does not allow one to sleep at night, and is associated with chills, fever, sweat and fatigue, one must immediately go for medical evaluation.

Low back pain may occur under many circumstances. For example, if the discs overgrow it may press the nerves; if the discs and vertebrae are degenerated they lose flexibility; a sport injury and heavy lifting may twist muscles, ligaments, vertebrae or nerves; a local inflammation may be sensed by the nerves.

Lower back pain is a condition described as pain in the lower back or lumbar region. The pain is characterized as mild to severe and often causes discomfort. It can be acute (sudden and severe) or chronic (if it has lasted for more than three months). This condition affects any group but tends to be common amongst younger people, especially those who participate in strenuous, physical activities.
