Acne lesions can appear as whiteheads, blackheads, small pink bumps called papules, or pimples (pus-filled red lesions). More severe forms can result in firm, painful nodules and cysts and may lead to scarring. Acne most often occurs on the face but can also develop on the shoulders, back, chest, legs, and buttocks.</p>
<p>Some natural topical treatments can also be beneficial in ridding one’s skin of blemishes and pimples. Best of all, these remedies can be prepared in your very own home.</p>
<ul>
<li>The acids in vinegar are excellent for eliminating skin blemishes.</li>
<li>To prepare a vinegar skin product, mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with about a teaspoon of salt, rub the mixture onto the affected area, and rinse off the skin after about thirty minutes.</li>
<li>Lemon acids are also extremely effective in treating pimples. Lemon has an astringent and antibacterial quality to it, and I have espoused it’s internal acid-neutralizing qualities on these pages many times.</li>
<li>Acne occurs when the hair follicles (pores) of the skin become clogged with sebum, bacteria and dead skin cells.</li>
</ul>
<p>Sebum is an oily substance produced by the sebaceous (oil) glands. Its purpose is to lubricate the skin and hair. Normally, sebum moves through the follicles and is discharged on to the surface of the skin.</p>
<p>During puberty (about age 11 to 14) and throughout the teen years, increased levels of androgen hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands to grow and produce more sebum. When there is excess sebum production, the follicle can become plugged.</p>
<p>Also during puberty, the skin cells of the follicle lining shed more quickly and can form sticky clumps. Bacteria and dead skin cells can combine with the sebum in the clogged pore.</p>
<p>Pores of the skin are blocked by accumulation of dirt, sweat and oil secretions. Such secretions lead to white cysts known as whiteheads or cause blackheads when exposed to air. An infected blackhead or whitehead gives way to a pus filled pimple. These pimples are also known as pustules or papules and can cause severe inflammation of the affected area.</p>
<p>As the sebum from within the sebaceous glands keeps collecting under the skin the pimple grows in size. There is a lot of debate about popping pimples and while some people believe that it is helpful others believe that it causes permanent scarring.</p>
<p>To understand the arguments both for and against popping pimples, it is important to understand the stages of pimple formation. Sebum is produced in the sebaceous glands located in the lower layers of our skin. This sebum slowly rises through the pores of the skin and reaches the surface where it forms a very thin film of oil.</p>
<p><strong>Home Remedies for Acne</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Take plenty of water to flush the toxins out of your body.</li>
<li>Keep hair and hands off your face. Oil contains in hands and hair will irritate the skin and make the acne problem more worse.</li>
<li>Never pinch or pop the pimples. Pinching pimples will leave scars on face and can cause long term damage.</li>
<li>Change the bedding and pillow cases in every couple of days. Oils from face and hair will be laid on the sheets and will cause worse acne problems.</li>
<li>It is good to avoid makeup materials and lotions that include chemical ingredients.</li>
<li>Wash face twice a day with acne specific soaps.</li>
