Anaemia is when there are a reduced number of red blood cells or haemoglobin in the blood. As a result, there is a reduced amount of oxygen available to the cells of the body. This means that with less oxygen, the body cannot carry out its normal everyday functions i.e. breaking down and re-building muscle.

To cope with anaemia, you can eat more iron-rich food to increase the iron in blood. Iron from meat sources is better absorbed than iron from plant sources. Iron absorption is affected by phytates, calcium and vitamin C. Vitamin C-rich foods help the absorption of iron. Anemia can be classified in a variety of ways, based on the morphology of RBCs. These drinks can cause low-birth weight for the baby and can hamper iron absorption in the body.
