Anaemia is when there are a reduced number of red blood cells or haemoglobin in the blood. As a result, there is a reduced amount of oxygen available to the cells of the body. This means that with less oxygen, the body cannot carry out its normal everyday functions i.e. breaking down and re-building muscle.
Feeling faint after meals is more likely to be an upset of glucose metabolism. This does not mean you are a diabetic, sometimes quite the contrary. It may be that the patient is producing too much insulin in response to food, and this makes ones blood sugar drop too low, usually about half an hour or so after the meal. To produce red blood cells, the body needs iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid, among other things. If there is a lack of one or more of these substances, anaemia will develop.
When the body is unable to supply adequate oxygen to all the tissues and cells of different systems of the circulatory system there will be a gradual breakdown of some of those cells and tissues. In the case of hair loss when there is reduced haemoglobin that means less oxygen will be supplied to parts of the body such as the scalp. Heme iron is derived from haemoglobin, and is found in animal foods that originally contained hemoglobin, such as red meat, fish, egg yolk, shellfish and poultry.
Iron from these sources is readily absorbed in the intestines. Approximately 2% of the patients who have viral hepatitis are also found to have this anaemia. When there is insufficient folic acid intake, our red blood cells can become enlarged and reduced in number. This condition is termed Folate Deficiency Anemia and / or megaloblastic anemia .This disease has been known to strike animals, although the causes vary depending on the animal which is affected. In ferrets, as an example, it is generally caused by high levels of estrogen, since these animals are known to induce ovulation.
To cope with anaemia, you can eat more iron-rich food to increase the iron in blood. Iron from meat sources is better absorbed than iron from plant sources. Iron absorption is affected by phytates, calcium and vitamin C. Vitamin C-rich foods help the absorption of iron. Anemia can be classified in a variety of ways, based on the morphology of RBCs. It is found in the person when the number of red blood cells in your blood is low.
For this reason, doctors sometimes describe anemia as having a low blood count.The aim here is to get most of your nutrients from high quality nutrient dense foods and become less reliant on supplements. For vegetarians and particularly vegans, it is also important to supplement with vitamin B12 to prevent another form of anaemia known as pernicious anaemia, which carries a greater neurological risk.
In pregnancy, do not automatically take an iron supplement unless iron deficient anaemia has been diagnosed and a supplement prescribed by your physician. Aside from the iron-rich foods to eat when pregnant, it is advisable that pregnant women shy away from drinking caffeinated drinks. These drinks can cause low-birth weight for the baby and can hamper iron absorption in the body.
