Anemia is a medical condition in which the red blood cell count or hemoglobin is less than normal. The normal level of hemoglobin is generally different in males and females. For men, anemia is typically defined as hemoglobin level of less than 13.5 gram/100ml and in women as hemoglobin of less than 12.0 gram/100ml. These definitions may vary slightly depending on the source and the laboratory reference used.

Causes of Anemia

  1. Blood loss: excessive bleeding such as hemorrhages or abnormal menstrual bleeding

  2. Chronic illness secondary to refractory anemia: inflammatory GI/GU diseases, malignancies (cancer), arthritis, kidney or liver failure, and acute and chronic infections

  3. Cancer therapy: surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy

  4. Infiltration (replacement) of bone marrow with cancer

  5. Hemolysis: Breakdown or destruction of red blood cells

  6. Decreased red cell production due to low levels of erythropoietin (a hormone produced by the kidney {90%} and liver {10%}) which promotes red blood cell production

Home Remedy for Anemia

  1. Cup beetroot juice, 1 cup of apple juice, mixed with either sugar or honey once a day.
  2. Consume a ripe banana with 1 tbsp of honey 2 times a day.
  3. Soak 10 currants overnight. Remove seeds and have for 3-4 weeks and have first thing in the morning.
  4. Drink a mixture of apple and tomato juice.
  5. Eat a lot of green leafy vegetables.
  6. Honey-It is very good for an anemic person because it helps increase the haemoglobin in the blood. It is rich in iron, copper and manganese.
  7. Daily intake of 3-4 pieces of dry figs helps in curing anemia.
  8. Avoid drinking coffee, tea and ingesting antacids, because they decrease iron absorption.
  9. Peanut butter and candy bars have a lot of iron in them.
  10. Dark green leafy vegetables are good sources of absorbable iron. Salmon and mackerel are good sources of vitamin B12.
  11. Deep breathing and light exercise like walking also tones up the system and increases the blood level and helps in anemia cure.
  12. Various yoga asanas like sarvangasana, paschomittanasana, uttanpadasana and shavasana are also beneficial for anemia
  13. Morpheme Amalaki Supplements provides the richness of Amla (Vitamin C), to promote good health and helps in anemia

Other remedies:

  1. Take 20 to 50 ml juice of pomegranate twice daily.
  2. Pound radish along with its leaves to extract the juice. Take 50 ml twice to build up the blood profile.
  3. Pound the leaves of neem, mix in honey and take approx. 10 g twice.
  4. Take the pulp of the ripe mango regularly along with sweetened milk to increase the haemoglobin levels.
  5. Soak 10-12 currants in water overnight. Remove seeds and eat them. Have for 2-4 weeks.

Foods to be Avoided

  1. Tea and coffee
  2. Refined foods like refined flour, pasta, sugar and polished rice
  3. Ready to eat foods like wafers, popcorn etc.
  4. Canned and preserved foods.
