The simple definition of dermatitis is inflammation of the skin. Many people think of dermatitis as synonymous with eczema but this is actually not true. Almost any rash can be thought of as a dermatitis based on this definition - including psoriasis, skin cancer, and seborrhea. However, we don't call every rash dermatitis.

Types of Dermatitis

  1. Atopic dermatitis is particularly prevalent in children; inherited factors seem important, as there is nearly always a family history of dermatitis or asthma.

  2. Irritant contact dermatitis is provoked by handling water, detergents, solvents or harsh chemicals, and by friction. Irritants cause more trouble in those who have a tendency to atopic dermatitis.

  3. Allergic contact dermatitis is due to skin contact with substances that most people don't react to: most commonly nickel, perfume, rubber, hair dye or preservatives. A dermatologist my identify the responsible agent by patch testing.

  4. Dry skin: especially on the lower legs, may cause asteatotic dermatitis.

  5. Nummular dermatitis (also called 'discoid eczema') may be set off initially by an injury to the skin: scattered coin-shaped irritable patches persist for a few months.

  6. Seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff are due to irritation from toxic substances produced by Malassezia yeasts that live on the scalp, face and sometimes elsewhere.

  7. Infective dermatitis seems to be provoked by impetigo (bacterial infection) or fungal infection.

  8. Gravitational dermatitis arises on the lower legs of the elderly, due to swelling and poorly functioning leg veins.

  9. Otitis externa – dermatitis affecting the external ear canal

  10. Meyerson naevus – dermatitis affecting melanocytic naevi (moles)

Treatment of Dermatitis

Dermatitis Treatment

Dermatitis is best treated if the type is known. However, there are measures that can be taken to improve symptoms even if the exact dermatitis type is not known.

  1. Keep skin as moisturized as possible as dry skin causes cracks in the outer layer inhibiting the barrier function of the skin.

  2. Reduce itching and scratching with topical medications or antihistamines.

  3. Avoid irritating and drying substances such as perfumes or harsh detergents.

  4. Treat other rashes, especially fungal infections, even though they may not seem related.

Home Remedies for Dermatitis

  1. You can take one teaspoon of sandalwood paste and mix with another teaspoon of camphor. Apply this mixture on the affected areas. You can also apply this paste on rashes and keep it for sometime.

  2. You can apply nutmeg paste on the affected areas and also put vitamin E on the affected area. You can have much relief from itching.

  3. Biotin pills are very effective in preventing dermatitis and are considered to be very beneficial home remedies.

  4. Softening your skin is very important if you have excessive dry skin. For that, you need to apply coconut oil on the eczema-affected portions.

  5. A light mud pack is also believed to be an effective home remedy for eczema.

  6. You can take sunbath as it helps in killing harmful bacteria.

  7. You can also opt for some water treatments; those have been proved to be quite beneficial including cold wet fomentations and cold compress. You can take this treatment twice daily.

  8. One more thing that you can do is oil treatment. Take 200 grams of mustard oil in an iron container. Boil it and add 50 grams of fresh neem or margosa leaves to the boiling oil. Keep heating until the leaves turn black. Leave the oil to cool and then sieve it. You can apply this oil mixture four times daily.

  9. You need to drink fresh tomato juice for curing your symptoms faster.

  10. You can also take zinc orally or apply it on the affected skin.
