For these problems to be diagnosed as ADHD, they must be outside the normal range for the child's age and development.</p>
<p><strong>Causes and Risk Factors</strong><br />
Imaging studies suggest that the brains of children with ADHD are different from other children. These children handle neurotransmitters (including dopamine, serotonin and adrenalin) differently from their peers.</p>
<p>ADHD can be inherited, but it is unclear exactly what causes it. Whatever the cause may be, it seems to start in early life as the brain is developing.</p>
<p>Depression, sleep deprivation, learning disabilities, tic disorders, and behavior can be confused with, or appear to ADHD. Every child suspected of having ADHD should have a careful evaluation to determine what is contributing to the behaviors that are causing concern.</p>
<p>ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder of childhood. It affects about 3-5% of school-age children. ADHD is diagnosed more often in boys than in girls.</p>
<p>Most children with ADHD also have at least a developmental or behavioral problems. You may also have other psychiatric problems like depression or bipolar disorder.</p>
<p>Symptoms<br />
Symptoms of ADHD fall into inattention and hyperactivity and impulsivity.</p>
<p>Some children with ADHD primarily have the inattentive type, some hyperactive-impulsive type and some the Combined Type. Those with the Inattentive type are less disruptive and less likely to be diagnosed with ADHD.</p>
<p>Symptoms of inattention:<br />
Fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork<br />
Has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities<br />
Not seem to listen when spoken to directly<br />
Do not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores or duties in the workplace<br />
Has difficulty organizing tasks and activities<br />
Avoids or dislikes tasks requiring sustained mental effort (such as schoolwork)<br />
Often loses toys, school assignments, pencils, books or tools needed for tasks or activities</p>
<p>Easily distracted<br />
Is often forgetful in daily activities<br />
Symptoms of hyperactivity:<br />
Play with your hands or feet or squirms in seat<br />
Leaves seat when remaining seated is expected<br />
Runs about or climbs in inappropriate situations<br />
Has difficulty playing quietly<br />
Is often "on the go" or acts as if "driven by a motor," talks excessively<br />
Impulsivity symptoms:<br />
Blurts out answers before they are completed<br />
Has difficulty awaiting turn<br />
Interrupts or intrudes on others (butts into conversations or games)</p>
<p>Signs and tests<br />
Too often, difficult children are incorrectly labeled with ADHD. On the other hand, many children with ADHD are not diagnosed. In any case, related learning disabilities or mood problems are often lost. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued guidelines to bring more clarity to this issue.<br />
Diagnosis is based on very specific symptoms that must be present in more than one stage.<br />
Children must be at least 6 attention symptoms or 6 symptoms of hyperactivity / impulsivity, with some symptoms present before age 7.<br />
Symptoms must be present for at least 6 months is seen in two or more options, and not caused by another problem.<br />
The symptoms must be severe enough to cause major difficulties in many places, including home, school and relationships with peers.<br />
In older children, ADHD is in partial remission when they still have symptoms but no longer meet the full definition of the disorder.<br />
The child must have an evaluation by a physician if you suspect ADHD. The evaluation may include:<br />
Parents and teachers questionnaires (eg, Connors, Burks)<br />
Psychological evaluation of children and families, including IQ tests and psychological tests<br />
Complete development, mental examination, nutritional, physical, psychosocial and</p>
<p>Treatment<br />
The American Academy of Pediatrics has guidelines for the treatment of ADHD:<br />
Set specific goals and appropriate to guide therapy.<br />
Starting medication and behavioral therapy.<br />
When treatment has not met these targets, re-evaluate the original diagnosis, the possible presence of other conditions, and how well the treatment plan has been implemented.<br />
Up regularly with your doctor to review the objectives, results and side effects of medications.
