Back Pain is one of the most common ailments prevalent today. Sedentary living habits, hazardous work patterns and psychological conditions associated with emotional stress, which bring about spasm of the muscles, cause back pain. As the back bears the weight of the entire body, overweight persons feel the strain on the back when they have to carry an extra load.
In most cases of back pain, the pain is usually felt either in the middle of the back or lower down. It may spread to both sides of the waist and the hips. In a condition of acute pain, the patient is unable to move and is bedridden.
Causes of Back Pain
Here is a look at a few common causes of back pain:
Osteoarthritis: This is usually caused by wear and tear on joints. The adult back usually has 24 vertebrae, which are joints in and of themselves. As these joints wear out, pain occurs. As long as the spinal cord is safe and the pain is not too intense, this is usually treated with anti-inflammatory medications. Sometimes, over the counter arthritis rubs are recommended.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: Like osteoarthritis, this involves destruction of the joints. However, in this case, this is caused by the immune system attacking healthy cells in the vertebrae, thus destroying them. Medications for this problem may be different, and when looking at home remedies, it is important to make sure there are no interactions between them, and that they do not make the condition worse.
Prostate Problems: Back pain is one sign of problems with the prostate. It is very important to make sure this is not the problem, as it could be BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia) or prostate cancer. When caught early enough prostate cancer may be treatable.
Symptoms of back pain:
Pain in the lower region of the back; may be severe and recurring often.
Numbness, tingling, or a shooting pain in your legs or buttocks, often on one side only.
Pain made worse by coughing, sneezing or twisting
Bladder or bowel control trouble.
Numbness around the groin or rectal area.
