Bronchitis is an inflammation of bronchi, the airway in the respiratory tract that carries air into the lungs. Its main symptom is a persistent cough that produces considerable quantities of phlegm. The other symptoms of bronchitis are coughing up extra mucus, wheezing and difficulty in breathing, apart from hoarseness, pain in the chest and loss of appetite. Bronchitis is usually classified into two types - acute bronchitis and chronic bronchitis.

While the former is caused by viruses or bacteria and lasts for several days or weeks, the latter is a persistent, productive cough that lasts for at least three months and continues for two consecutive years. Mostly bronchitis is caused by an infection. Allergies and chemical irritations, such as atmospheric pollution and smoke of the cigarettes, are some other contributing factors.

Symptoms

The symptoms of either type of bronchitis may include:

  1. Chest discomfort
  2. Cough that produces mucus; if it's yellow-green, you are more likely to have a bacterial infection
  3. Fatigue
  4. Fever -- usually low
  5. Shortness of breath worsened by exertion or mild activity
  6. Wheezing

Even after acute bronchitis has cleared, you may have a dry, nagging cough that lingers for several weeks.
Additional symptoms of chronic bronchitis include:

  1. Ankle, feet, and leg swelling
  2. Blue-colored lips from low levels of oxygen
  3. Frequent respiratory infections (such as colds or the flu)

Treatment
The problem with bronchitis, is that antibiotics do not normally treat it. That is because this is a type of viral infection, thus, you are left with just a few options on how to deal with this. The good news about bronchitis is that it is not that hard to get rid of. Usually, the best treatment for it is to get a lot of rest. The doctor will also tell you to drink a lot of liquids, even more so than what you normally drink. It also does not hurt to use a cough medication.

Bronchitis Home Remedy

  1. Drink plenty of liquids, or even extra liquids to keep phlegm easier to get rid of. It doesn’t matter really what kinds of liquids these would be, but you may find tea, soup and other warm liquids soothing for your throat that may be irritated from coughing. Water can also be used for steam treatments.
  2. Gargling with warm saltwater may be soothing to your throat as it may break through mucus that may be clinging to your throat irritating it. It takes one teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water because too much salt can burn the throat and too little not effective enough. Don’t swallow the salt water, though.
  3. Most likely the bronchitis came on the heels of a cold or flu. Just continue to rest up all that you can. Do not go to work as you may be still infectious with the virus most likely responsible for what caused this. Just stay home and rest and do not go to work as you need the rest to get rid of bronchitis in a quicker fashion than you would if you had gone to work.
  4. Here is a bronchitis home remedy involving sesame seeds. Make a mixture of one rounded teaspoon of sesame seeds with a teaspoon of linseed and a pinch of common salt and a teaspoon of honey. This mixture is given once at night. Or, half a teaspoon of dry seeds crushed into a powder should be given mixed with two tablespoons of water two or three times a day.
