Coughing is one of the body’s ways to remove foreign material or mucus from the lungs and throat. The lungs and lower respiratory passages become sterile. It is a common symptom when the airways become tight. There are generally two classifications of cough one is productive cough which produces mucus from the lungs and the other is nonproductive cough, which is dry and doesn’t produce any mucus from the lungs.

It can affect the person of all ages. It can be acute cough or chronic cough depending on its duration. In scientific terms coughing is a reflex action, started by stimulation of sensory nerves in the lining of the respiratory passages - the tubes we use to breathe.

Common causes of Cough are:

  2. Pertussis (whooping cough)

  3. Asthma

  4. Weather changes

  5. Inflammation of larynx or pharynx

  6. Smoking

Home Remedies for Cough Tips

  1. Add a gram of turmeric powder to a teaspoon of honey for curing dry cough.

  2. Add a little ginger juice to a teaspoon of honey and take for relief.

  3. Drink hot milk with honey at bedtime.

  4. Make cough syrup from baked onion juice, comfrey tea, and honey.

  5. Apple cider vinegar Sprinkle apple cider vinegar on your pillowcase before bedtime.

  6. Grapes help a great deal in treating cold in a few days.

  7. Essential oil of juniper- A few drops may be used in hot water for cough relief.

  8. A cup of grape juice mixed with a teaspoon of honey is recommended for cough relief.

Treatment of Cough:

Other useful measures in the treatment of cough are hot fomentations to the chest and throat and application of frequent chest packs. If the cough is checked while the secretion is abundant. The patient should be made to sit in the tub with a small amount of hot water, and cold water should be poured over his head, spine and chest to induce cough. This should be followed by vigorous rubbing. The patient should be dried thoroughly and then wrapped in dry blankets in the bed. Diet and routine for Cough

  1. Cold foods, cold drinks, ice cream, sweets, fried foods, milk products like cheese, creams, yoghurt etc. should not be taken.

  2. Hot milk without fat can be taken if boiled with a pice of crushed ginger.

  3. Half a teaspoon of turmeric powder mixed with the milk is effective.

  4. Sweet fruit juice should also be avoided, Breads, meats, nuts and pastries are not advisable.

  5. It is good to take a light warm diet like boiled or steamed vegetables; vegetable soups and fruits, which areok not juicy, like papaya and apple.

  6. Spiced teas, herbal teas and other hot drinks are beneficial.

  7. Sleeping during the daytime should be avoided.

  8. Taking cold showers, exposure to cold winds, fans, air conditioners etc. should be avoided
