Congress Telangana Ministers Return Empty Handed

Congress leaders and ministers who went to New Delhi yesterday to press the High Command for a positive statement on the statehood issue has returned empty handed. Latest indications say that the Congress party wants the status quo to be maintained on the Telangana issue.

The Congress is also reported to have told the ministers to withdraw their resignations and the central government can only take some decision on the Telangana issue only when all the violence and turmoil in Andhra Pradesh stops.

Though Pranab Mukherjee promised "good news" for Telangana in a few days, the indications are that the "good news" would only be a package like which was announced for Vidarbha. The Central government is planning to announce a package of around 10,000 to 20,000 crores for the Telangana region.

The Congress High Command is worried that it would have to risk 28 MP seats in the Andhra, Rayalaseema and the Hyderabad regions in return for 14 seats in the Telangana region. The Congress High Command has almost come to a conclusion that it would lose more if it agrees for a separate Telangana.
