It is basically a scalp problem, characterized by the shedding of dead skin cells by the scalp. Dandruff in medical terminology is known by the name of pityriasis simplex capillitii. When one suffers from dandruff, flakes of white dead skin arise from the scalp.</p>
<p>Normally our skin cells undergo a renewal process. In scalp too the cells go through a renewal process. The old ones are replaced by new, and the dead cells are discarded and pushed to the surface of hair.</p>

<p>The problem of dandruff is triggered by certain factors such as stress, weakened immune system, constipation, excess sebum or oil secreted by scalp, underlying illness like psoriasis, and exposure to extreme temperatures, fungal infection, head lice, intake of too salty, sugary or spicy food, and intake of alcohol. Dandruff is often detrimental to social prestige and self-confidence. It causes much irritation and itching in the scalp. Often many people are seen to hold an association between dandruff and dry scalp. But this is a wrong notion, and there is actually no relation between dandruff and dry scalp. In other words, a person with dry scalp may not necessarily have dandruff.</p>
