Encounter’s Exposés

Dasaradharam, the editor of Encounter magazine, brought to light numerous scandals involving NTR. He is widely credited with pioneering investigative journalism in India—and was the grandson of Pingali Venkayya, the designer of India’s national flag.

During NTR’s prohibition-era rule, Dasaradharam famously published photographs showing prohibited liquor stored openly in Ramoji Rao’s godowns—creating a major public sensation. He also exposed NTR’s performance of shudra poojalu, publishing photographic evidence that challenged NTR’s public image as a pious leader.

Another major revelation involved Vasantha Nageswara Rao (VNR), who served as Home Minister under NTR. Encounter reported that VNR referred to a woman from a lower caste as “Veedi kuthuru” (street girl) and made derogatory remarks about her. The magazine also alleged that NTR was involved in the harassment—and possibly the elimination—of IAS officer Raghavendra Rao.

Due to these fearless reports, Dasaradharam faced severe backlash. It is widely believed that NTR and VNR orchestrated his financial and professional persecution. The entire state was aware of the pressure he endured—and ultimately, he was brutally murdered. His death remains a dark chapter in Telugu journalism.

Fact 2: The Viceroy Hotel Incident

During a private gathering at the Viceroy Hotel, Chandrababu Naidu had organized a party for TDP MLAs. Unexpectedly, Senior NTR arrived with Lakshmi Parvathi. TDP party workers, deeply upset by NTR’s conduct—especially his relationship with Lakshmi Parvathi while still married—openly confronted and scolded him. Witnesses say he was so humiliated that he left the event in disgrace, proving he was far from the “ideal man” his image suggested.

Fact 3: Controversial Practices and Actions

  1. Seva Poojalu: NTR performed public service rituals, and films like Bendu Apparao R.M.P. even dramatized such acts—blurring the line between cinema and political image-building.
  2. Kanya Poojalu: This involved worshipping young girls, sometimes in states of undress—a practice that drew sharp criticism. Articles in Encounter and other outlets condemned it. He also maintained an illicit relationship with Devika, an actress known for her role in Thobuttuvula Sentiment. Her daughter, Kanaka (famous for the “Jada Tholu Belt” song), suffered greatly due to this association.
  3. Ribbon-Cutting Obsession: NTR refused to attend any inauguration unless the ribbon-cutting knife was made of silver or gold—and would reportedly take the knife home afterward.
  4. Career Manipulation: He allegedly sabotaged actor Haranath’s career, preventing his rise in the industry.
  5. Extramarital Affair: His relationship with Lakshmi Parvathi began while she was still married.
  6. Political Violence: He is accused of involvement in the killing of Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga.

Fact 4: Party Split and Political Maneuvering

Anditey juttu, lekapothey kaallu!!!

When the TDP split, internal statements revealed deep fractures. After the division, NTR approached Upendra, wept before him, and pleaded for Congress support. He even told P.V. Narasimha Rao:

I’m stepping back from national politics. I’ll stay only in Andhra. Please return my party to me.

Meanwhile, Chandrababu Naidu promised Dagupati Venkateswara Rao the post of Deputy Chief Minister. When asked what he’d offer Harikrishna, CBN reportedly joked:

Just give him a party post—he’ll be happy running around!

This remark exposed CBN’s true opinion of NTR’s sons—something the public already suspected, but which CBN later denied knowing.

NTR also begged Nandamuri Balakrishna (NBK):

Please control Lakshmi Parvathi. Don’t let the party split.

But by then, it was too late. CBN and the rebel MLAs had already made their move—and nothing could stop the split.

NTR’s Philosophy—and His Son’s Contradictions

Senior NTR’s political philosophy was clear: moral authority, cultural pride, and public service.

Yet Junior NTR’s actions often contradicted this legacy. In one interview, when asked, “You dance like Chiranjeevi—what do you think of him?”, he replied:

Chiranjeevi? I don’t even know who that is.

Later, Chiranjeevi and stars like Nagarjuna and Venkatesh publicly distanced themselves from him. Fans reportedly surrounded the studio in protest when he left after that comment.

Junior NTR later apologized publicly and tried to retreat—but his career never recovered. As critics noted:

If you disrespect the Megastar, don’t expect hits. Mem hit cheste, ney hit avvadu!

Even after watching Shankar Dada Zindabad on its first day, Junior NTR reportedly said:

Abbaaa… this film is so loud and chaotic. My brother would’ve been furious!

Yet recently, he accepted an award from none other than Chiranjeevi himself—highlighting the irony.

Final Thought

These are some lesser-known truths about the so-called “legend.”
