Over 75% of adults over age 35 suffer from periodontal disease, but most do not realize until substantial damage has already occurred. Often painless, gum disease progresses relentlessly: gums separate from teeth, pockets form and deepen, and bacteria-produced toxins destroy tissue. While in its first stage, called gingivitis, professional dental care and good oral hygiene can reverse periodontal disease.</p>
<p>For hundreds of years, people have recognized a connection between oral infections and systemic diseases. The latest research has found an association between gum disease and cardiovascular disease, babies with low birth weight, respiratory infections and diabetes. One study found that people with periodontal bone loss had twice the risk of fatal heart disease. The exact mechanism that increases cardiovascular risk remains murky, but experts believe that bacteria from chronic gum infection enter the bloodstream and cause the white blood cells (which fight infections) to release the materials create a buildup of fatty deposits and clots in the arteries.</p>
<p>Prevention -<br />
Brush the inner surfaces, outer and chewing at least twice a day with a soft bristle brush at an angle of 45 °. Some people find electric brushes easier to use.</p>
<p>Floss at least once a day, gently guiding the floss between teeth. While holding the floss taut and curved around each tooth, slide the floss up and down. Continue using a clean section of floss for each tooth.</p>
<p>Get professional teeth cleaning every six months or more frequently if you are prone to plaque or gingivitis. "It's probably the best investment that an adult can do in terms of prevention of periodontal disease and tooth decay," Caton says.</p>
<p>Request a periodontal screening and annual assessment of how the gum tissue has pulled away from teeth.</p>
<p>Risk factors: -<br />
Several factors may put you at risk for periodontal disease.</p>
<p>Hormones: -<br />
Birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, pregnancy, puberty and menstrual cycles all raise estrogen levels. "The receptor cells in the periodontal tissues are sensitive to estrogen, which causes an overreaction to bacteria left after brushing," Caton explains. What this means is that you must be scrupulously careful brushing and flossing in the Terms.</p>
<p>Drugs: -<br />
Some blood pressure medicines and medicines for epilepsy drugs create an overgrowth of gum tissue, especially in people with gum disease already exist. Bacteria can easily accumulate in the enlarged gums and begin to destroy the tissues supporting the teeth.</p>

Keeping emotions in balance will help, too. People are faced with stressful situations often become distracted and cut hygiene habits. Also, do not deal with the stress decreases.</p>

University at Buffalo researchers have recently discovered that low levels of antioxidant vitamins increased periodontal risk, attributing the findings to the body's need for antioxidants to maintain homeostasis and control of bacterial damage.</p>
