An almond is commonly referred to as a nut but it is actually the seed of a drupe. There are two types of almonds (bitter and sweet). Bitter almonds contain toxic substances and are used to make oil (toxic substances are removed during the process). Sweet almonds are non toxic and are the ones that can be eaten.
Almond oil, from either type, is commonly used as a substitute for olive oil. Sweet almond oil is easily absorbed into the skin and has traditionally been used by massage therapists. It is well known carrier oil used with essential oils for aromatherapy.
To make almond milk you only need about a cup of raw almonds. Make sure not to buy or use roasted almonds. Almonds have been linked to lowering cholesterol and improving heart health. For anyone that has a history of heart issues, or high cholesterol, adding almonds to the diet can help.
Studies have even been done seeing if almonds can help with things like colon cancer and Alzheimer's disease. For anyone trying to lose weight, almonds offer the satisfaction of feeling full when eaten in moderation. This is due to the fact that almonds are rich in fiber which can help to maintain a healthy body weight.
Other benefits of dieting showed a similar pattern. The dieters who did not eat almonds did not have lower blood pressure. The dieters who ate almonds for weight loss had 11 per cent lower blood pressure. The dieters who did not eat almonds lost 1% of their water weight. There are numerous ways in which you can introduce almonds in your daily diet.
For example, when you eat cereal in the morning, you can simply add a couple of spoons of cut almonds to the plate. Your breakfast will not only be healthier, but will also be tastier and crunchier.
The best way to consume almonds is eating it without the skin. Almond milk is a very common preparation from almond. Grind the blanched almonds to a smooth paste; add sugar and cold boiled water giving it the consistency of the milk for nutritious, healthy drink and rich in vitamins.
Easily digestible than cow's milk making it ideal wholesome drink for children. Almond butter is another variation that is prepared from almonds. Beneficial for older people who don't get enough proteins in their diets.
Adding Almonds to Your Diet
Almonds are a great snack, all by themselves. If I'm going to be out and about, I often put a few raw almonds in my pocket or carry a small bag of them for when hunger strikes.
Almond butter can be used instead of peanut butter - for example, with celery, or on low-carb bread or toast.
Add almonds to salads, yogurt, cottage cheese -- use your imagination! Nuts can be added to a lot of different foods.
Avoid almonds which are coated in a sugary or honey glaze.
Use unsweetened almond milk in shakes, sauces, egg nog, and similar uses.
