Once you book your railway ticket, you should verify whether yours is a confirmed ticket or whether it comes with any strings attached.</p>
<p>In case you don’t know how the ticket booking system works, the types given below can shed some light and help you out.</p>
<p><strong>Confirmed Tickets –</strong> If your train ticket status reads as confirmed, you can pat yourself on the back and start planning your trip fully. Confirmed tickets come with a seat number and a coach number, so you’ll have a basic idea about where you’ll be seated. Such reservations will be permanent, and your seat will be transferred to another person only when you cancel your ticket due to any circumstances. You can claim your money back once you cancel your ticket, although there are a few conditions involved in this issue.</p>
<p><strong>RAC Tickets (Reservation Against Cancellation)-</strong> The RAC system is a unique one followed in Indian Railways, and under this system, around 15 seats in the coach are reserved for such RAC-status passengers. These 15 passengers will be provided with seats where they can sit, but no berths will be provided. This system helps in accommodating more people in the coach and meeting the demand, so you can opt for RAC tickets if you’re okay with not having a berth to sleep on. Your chances of getting a berth will rise as other people start cancelling their RAC tickets and your ticket may move to a confirmed status in some days.</p>
<p><strong>Waitlist Tickets –</strong> When all berths and seats are full, your ticket status will be put on the waitlist. Under this level, you’ll have to wait for your ticket to move into the RAC or Confirmed status over a period of time, as others start cancelling their tickets. The probability of whether your ticket will move up depends heavily on the route that you’re taking and the time of the month/year. This is because trains that run during holidays and weekends are in great demand, so it’s unlikely that your ticket status will move up during this time. This is also true in the case of trains that run between major destinations.</p>
<p><strong>Tatkal Tickets –</strong> These are emergency tickets that you can book two days before the journey. The catch here is that the ticket price is significantly greater, and you’ll not receive a refund if you cancel a tatkal ticket that you’ve booked.</p>
