Kedarnath
is a secluded, Hindu holy town in the Rudraprayag district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. Kedarnath is located in the Himalayan range about 3584 m above the sea level, near the river Mandakini and surrounded by magnificent snow-capped peaks. Kedarnath is the home to one of the holiest Hindu temple, the Kedarnath Temple.
Hindu pilgrims from all over the world consider pilgrimages incomplete without the Kedarnath Yatra
. Kedarnath is considered to be the abode of Lord Shiva and forms part of the Char Dham pilgrimage. The other three temples which form a part of this journey include Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.
Badrinath to Kedarnath
is 226 km by road. From Gaurikund, it is 14 km to Kedarnath by road, and trekking in this path is an experience one can never forget. Earlier the routes were not safe but now they are single track and quite safe for travelling. The options for reaching Kedarnath include walking, riding on a pony or a palanquin or being carried by a porter.
There are very few hotels in Kedarnath and these can be found downhill, quite near the spot where the trek to the temple starts. These hotels are mainly guest houses and small and comfortable places where you can stay for a couple of days while fulfilling the pilgrimage. Some of the hotels that are present include Hotel Himachal House, Hotel Bikaner House, Jalandhar House, Hotel Marwad House, Hotel Jaipir House and Hotel Agarwal House. These are deluxe hotels and they have all modern amenities in their rooms, including heaters. You can grab a bite at the in-house restaurants in these hotels and the food will normally be very affordable. Hotel Punjabi Sindh Awas is one of the popular hotels and this has two types of rooms - rooms with two beds and rooms with four beds. The latter will be ideal for families while the former will be ideal for couples staying in these hotels.
The Kedarnath Temple is a majestic sight, standing aristocratically amidst lofty snow-capped mountains. The shrine is one of the 12 jyothirlingas of Lord Shiva. The Kedarnath Temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya (April end or first week of May) and closes on Bhai Duj (October end or first week of November) due to heavy snowfall. A conical rock formation inside the temple is worshipped as Lord Shiva in his Sadashiva form. This temple is an architectural marvel, built of massive stone slabs over a large rectangular platform.
