Leucoderma is also known as vitiligo. It is a distressing skin condition. The word Leucoderma means the white skin. There is a gradual loss of the pigment melanin from the skin layers which results in white patches. The white patches on the skin look ugly. Especially in those persons who has dark skin or complexion. However, this condition does not cause any organic harm. Leucoderma is a fairly common disorder and it affects one per cent or more of the world’s population.
The incidence is a little higher in India. The disorder can occur at any age in either sex in normal skin. It is, however, more common in women than men. The most affected areas are the hands, the neck, the back and the wrist in that order. It is not an infectious disease. This can occur because of stress and emotional disturbances. This disease should be cured as soon as it is detected, but it can not be cured hundred percent.
What are the causes Of Leucoderma?
There are many reasons responsible for occurrence of leucoderma.
Ecessive Mental Worry is said to be one of the main cause of leucoderma.
Chronic or acute gastric disorders
Some problems with hepatic function like jaundice, typhoid
Parasites in alimentary canal
Defective perspiration system
Burn injuries
Heredity is also a very important factor responsible for leucoderma
Symptom of Leucoderma (Vitiligo)
Lecucoderma usually starts with a small white spot and later on it develops into patches. These patches are pale in the beginning but become whiter and whiter as time passes due to loss of pigment. As spots enlarge, they merge into each other and, in course of time, form a very broad patch. In some cases, most of the skin of the body may be covered with white patches in Lecucoderma.
Treatment of Leucoderma
There is no cure for leucoderma, but there are several treatments, including dyes or psoralens used in combination with Ultraviolet a light treatment.
Take medicines regularly in the early days itself, so that complete cure can be achieved
Avoid working or roaming in the sun.
Avoid fast foods, citrus fruits, coffee, tea, cold drinks, alcohol, beer, non-veg, egg, etc., since it can cause spread of the disease.
Skin grafting, melanocyte transplantations and tattooing. All these procedures are costly and painful.
A paste made from the seeds of the radish is valuable in treating leucoderma. About thirty-five grams of these seeds should be powdered in two teaspoons of vinegar and applied on the white patches.
Home Treatment for Leucoderma
There are a few home treatments that can be used for vitiligo cure. Two such effective remedies are given below:
Psoralea Seeds
The seeds of psoralea herbs can be taken orally to heal up white patches on the skin. The seeds are first soaked in ginger juice for 3 days and then a fine powder is obtained by grinding the seeds. This powder should be taken by mixing one gram in a glass of milk. The powder can be applied directly on the patches as well.
Turmeric
Turmeric is combined with mustard oil and is used for the treatment of this skin problem. About 500 grams of turmeric is soaked in 8 liters of water overnight. Then it is boiled for some time, so that only one liter of water is left behind. The mixture is the strained and 500 ml of mustard oil is added to it. This mixture should be applied on the skin patches for 3-4 months.
