Nasal congestion or blockage of nasal passage is a common problem with infants, children, adolescents and also adults. It is also known as stuffy nose problem. It is the outcome of blood vessel inflammation that leads to the swelling of membranes lining the interior passages of the nose. The inflammation is usually triggered by bacteria or virus that causes excessive secretion of thick mucus clogging the nasal passage.

It hinders the free flow of air in and out of nose. Nasal congestion thus causes difficulty in breathing, interferes with sleep, causes snoring and also results in difficulties associated with speech development, ears and hearing. It is quite annoying and may be accompanied by facial pain or headache. The causes of nasal congestion may be listed as follows:

  1. Flu

  2. Common cold

  3. Allergies

  4. Measles

  5. Cluster headache

  6. Whooping cough

  7. Sinus infection

  8. Nasal polyps

  9. Hay fever

  10. Pregnancy

  11. Vasomotor rhinitis

  12. Anatomical obstructions such as deviated nasal septum

  13. Usage of nasal sprays for long time

  14. Trauma to the nose

  15. Foreign body in the nasal passage

  16. Exposure to environmental irritants like tobacco smoke etc.
    Home Remedies

  17. Consume 3-4 baked black pepper seeds in the morning or inhale the fumes by burning them. This is an effective home remedy for nasal congestion.

  18. Dissolve 1 teaspoon baking soda in saline water and irrigate nose with the solution. This relieves congestion.

  19. Add some grape fruit juice to a bowl of lukewarm water and use the solution as an inhaler early in the morning or at bedtime. This loosens a congested nose.

  20. Burn 4-5 cardamom seeds in hot coal and inhale the fumes. This eases nasal congestion.

  21. Add a pinch of salt to a glass of boiled water and with the help of dropper, put 2-3 drops of the warm saline water in to each nostril. This helps in opening up the congested nose.

  22. Heat little amount of apple cider vinegar in a pan and inhale the fumes. This is a good treatment for nasal congestion.

  23. Add 1 teaspoon honey to 2 teaspoons of grated horseradish. Put this mixture on tongue and take a deep breathe. The aroma of the mixture will relieve congestion.

  24. Boil 2-3 tomatoes in 1 cup water. Add 1 teaspoon garlic paste and butter to the soup. Also sprinkle black pepper powder and salt to taste. Take this soup thrice daily. This helps to get rid of this congestion problem.

  25. Grind few roasted carom seeds in to powder. Collect the powder in a tiny cotton cloth pouch and keep it within your pillow cover. This is a great solution to the problem of nasal congestion.

  26. Soak a cotton ball in peppermint oil or eucalyptus oil and inhale the essence. This removes the congestion from nose.

  27. A warm bath or steam shower alleviated nasal congestion.
