Leucoderma is skin disorder which is also known as the vitiligo. It is quite a distressing condition in which skin appears white in patches. Leucoderma means white skin. Skin gradually becomes white due to loss of pigment melanin in skin layer. Apart from cosmetic concern, leucoderma is absolutely harmless condition. Though vitiligo on fair skin often goes unnoticed but it looks ugly on dark colored skin. Leucoderma is not the result of any infection by microorganisms. It is neither infectious nor contagious.
Leucoderma patches may be in various shapes and sizes. Also any part of the body can get affected by it. And the good news is that leucoderma is curable. There are plenty of otions for treatment for leucoderma. If the person affected starts the treatment as early as possible, results are very good.
Causes of leucoderma (vitiligo).
The exact cause for the leucoderma (vitiligo) remains unknown. Many wrong beliefs are prevalent about the causes of leucoderma. It is not caused by eating fish and drinking milk at the same time, as is generally believed because even vegetarians suffer from this disorder. Other food combinations such as pumpkin and milk, onion and milk as possible causes of leucoderma also have no basis. leucoderma (vitiligo) is not caused by any germs, nor is it due to bad blood. Some of the possible causes for Vitiligo includes:
Skin trauma.
Sunburn.
Mental worry (stress).
Heredity is also causative factor and about 30 percent of patients have history of the disorder.
Physical illness
Symptoms of Leucoderma
When the cells that make pigment cease to function white patches begin to appear at different places on the body. These patches also appear inside the mouth and nose and on the scalp. The hair that grows on the infected area of the scalp turns white. Usually these white patches are first noticed in the summer and are more susceptible to sun burn because the protective pigment melanin isn't present.
Leucoderma cure –
A mixture of turmeric and mustard oil is another helpful concoction. This can be done by pounding approximately 500 grams of turmeric and left steeped in water overnight. The next day, it should be boiled until it goes down to only one liter of water strained and blended in 500 ml mustard oil. The mixture is then heated until the turmeric dissolves. It will again be strained and stored for future use. The oil and turmeric mixture should be massaged on the affected areas twice daily for several months. This is one of the good leucoderma home remedies.
Home Remedies for Leucoderma
Soak psoralea seeds in ginger juice for 3 days. Thereafter, dry them and grind to make a fine powder. Have 1 gram of this powder, with a glass of milk, for about a month. You can also apply this powder on white patches.
Another method would be to soak psoralea and tamarind seeds in water for 3-4 days. Dry them well and grind to form a paste. Apply this paste on the affected area on a daily basis.
Goosefoot vegetable is effective in treating leucoderma. Apply the juice of this vegetable on the affected area, once a day. Continue it for 2 months.
Mix red clay and ginger in equal parts. Apply this on the affected area and wash off when dry.
Fill a copper vessel with drinking water and leave it overnight. Have this water, on an empty stomach, every morning. This is effective in healing leucoderma.
Combine 100 gm each of alfalfa and cucumber juice. Consume this mixture two times a day i.e. in the morning and evening. This is a useful home remedy for treating leucoderma
