You do not need anything else. Neither "Codec Pack" nor changes to your system or new reading program or WMV converter<br />
. That's the theory. In practice watching the Windows Media Video, sometimes reserves some surprises. To avoid major problems, here are some tips depending on your version of Windows.</p>
<p><strong>Windows XP</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Preferably, use version 11 of WMP to watch your WMV, especially if they have DRM.</li>
<li>Apply all available updates on the Windows drive (via Windows Update)</li>
<li>Do not try to remove WMP.</li>
<li>If a problem occurs, try restoring Windows or try installing the Windows Media codec or Wmfdist package.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Windows 7 and Vista</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Ensure that all updates to Windows, Windows Media Player and Media Center are applied.</li>
<li>In case of problems, try to restore Windows (see panel)</li>
<li>Avoid installing Codec Packs</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Open WMV files with Windows mail</strong></p>
<p>I just received a question from someone who installed VLC media player (windows vista), but could no longer open attachments with .Wmv extensions in windows mail, the “no program associated” message shows up every time.<br />
Here is the solution that works with both XP and 7 (with Outlook Express and Windows mail and mail with Videolan player);<br />
Open the notepad and type the text below<br />
“Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00”</p>
<ul>
<li>Save the file with the extension ‘.Reg’ instead of .Txt Classic</li>
<li>Launch ‘.Reg’ obtained by double-clicking it, put "yes" to confirm modification of the registry.</li>
<li>Reboot the PC (it is always better) open your usual email and try to open a ‘wmv’ attachment, logically the link works and vlc player opens.</li>
</ul>
<p>NOTE, this solution applies to all videos and audio extensions that cause trouble. It suffices to repeat the notepad operation by replacing the wmv extension with the problematic one like avi, mpg, mov, etc.</p>
<p>If despite your best efforts, it still does not function and your movies (WMV HD) are not displayed;</p>
<ul>
<li>Check the DirectX version</li>
<li>Have an updated driver for your graphics card (or integrated GPU)</li>
<li>Make sure you have a powerful enough machine (if the video is high definition) or that the GPU hardware acceleration is enabled.</li>
<li>Restore or reinstall Windows as a last resort</li>
</ul>
<p>Are you in an impasse? Windows Media or its utilities appear to be responsible for your problems? Change! Install another drive! WMP and Media Center are not the only software in the IT industry! Unless you want to perform miracles, this search will help you discover very friendly applications.</p>
<p>Oh, before I forget, your problem may stem from the fact that your version of Windows is pirated. Just ensure that it is not, trust me, it will save you a lot of trouble. Do your level best to purchase a legal copy from a reliable shop. Too many persons complain about the non-readability of wmv extensions on PCs or DVD (when burned) for this singular reason: “pirated licenses”. To be warned is to be forearmed.</p>
