Ladakh because of its high mountain ranges has become a delight for adventure seekers. Every trekker, whether a beginner or a professional wants to experience at least once, the excitement of trekking in this region, popular for its high passes. But one should be aware of dos and don’ts of trekking as a single wrong step can ruin the entire trip. This article provides tips on trekking that should be followed in order to have an adventurous experience.

As soon as you reach here, give yourself sufficient time to acclimatize to low oxygen levels of Ladakh which is a high altitude region. This is really important as otherwise your body will not be able to cooperate with the environment of this region. Other than this, keep in mind following measures to make trekking in Ladakh a wonderful experience.

While Walking on Mountains Always Remember:

  • -Avoid walking fast. Give your journey a peaceful start and maintain a slow rhythm as you precede otherwise weariness will soon overpower the excitement.
  • -Always be conscious about your breathing pattern and try to walk in sync with it as this will help to avoid running out of breath.
  • -To obtain a better grip, always place your heels first. This is recommended to cover distance of few centimeters with each step.
  • -While climbing a very sharp slope try to walk in zigzags.
  • -Do not overtake the fellow trekkers especially on narrow treks.
  • -Be cautious of stepping over loose stones.
  • -Leave enough space among the next person while ascending/descending a steep slope or over loose stones. This will avoid the hitting of rolling stones on other people.
  • -Be careful while walking over wet grass as it can be really slippery.
  • -Avoid walking through the standing crops as it may damage them.
  • -Do not disrespect the traditions and emotions of Ladakhi people.

Things to keep in mind while taking rest:

-Always take support from a tree trunk or a big stone while taking a halt from the journey. Position yourself with your legs resting on a higher place as this will regulate your blood circulation. -Take timely halts. Frequent and prolonged halts both can disturb the walking rhythm. Stop wherever it comes naturally either at a steep ascent or at top of a ridge. Those who follow right walking techniques do not face much of halting problems.


  • -Good quality pair of trekking boots and socks to cover the long distance comfortably.
  • -Warm-waterproof clothes that will help during untimely rains.
  • -Adequate food and water for emergency.
  • -Necessary medicines to avoid health problems.
  • -Water purifying pills as water at times is not pure and unhygienic for drinking purpose.
  • -Sunglasses, hat and sunscreen lotion to avoid fatigue in bright sunlight and tanning of skin.
  • -Feather sleeping bag for comfortable camping.
  • -Carry along with you things like army knife, compass and route map. If possible take guidance from a trekking guide.

As prevention is better than cure- always try to avoid things that may land you in trouble. Keep in mind all the recommended precautions.
