Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood of a person, energy and ability to function. Unlike normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. Can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide. The good news: bipolar disorder can be treated, and people with asthma can live full and productive life.

Bipolar disorder is divided into several types, each with different patterns of symptoms. These include: bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymia, rapid cycling and mixed bipolar. Bipolar I Disorder is the most serious

. People with type I and experience "highs" and have psychotic experiences while suffering from bipolar disorder type II have less severe symptoms. They experience episodes of those hours or days only last a few and the severity of the 'high' does not lead to hospitalization. Cyclothymia is a mild form of the disorder.

Those with cyclothymia tend to have milder symptoms than the full-blown bipolar disorder. About 10% of people with bipolar disorder have rapid cycling. In rapid cycling, four or more episodes of depression in a year there. In most forms of bipolar conditions, moods vary between high and depressed, but with mixed bipolar disorder, a person experiencing mania and depression at the same time.

Bipolar Disorder Causes

The reasons for bipolar disorder have not yet been precisely determined. According to the studies and research, this mental disorder is due to a combination of factors such as genetic, neurochemical and environmental.

It is reported that about 80% of bipolar disorder is inherited or occur due to genetic factors. In other words, a person is more likely that this mental illness if you have:

• Family member with a mood disorder like depression
• Parents with bipolar disorder
• Twin brother or sister with bipolar disorder

• During the emission of stress hormones such as cortisol
• Hyperactiveness atypical in some parts of the brain that are related to emotion and movement coordination and low noise in parts of the brain that are associated with inhibition, attention, trial, and the concentration
• A person with a family history of bipolar disorder
• Unusual brain chemical serotonin

• Increased use of alcohol and drugs
• Hormonal problems
• Substance Abuse
• Seasonal factors

Antipsychotics used alone or in combination with other medications to treat these patients. Before opting for a test of bipolar disorder, one should talk to a doctor who can guide the patient into the correct mode of treatment by conducting a laboratory test, an interview and physical examination. As bipolar disorder is a lifelong disease, those affected need a long-term treatment to keep symptoms under control. Bipolar disorder medication and psychotherapy are included in a maintenance plan for an effective treatment to prevent relapses and reduce the severity of symptoms.
